The Pied Kingfisher (Ceryle rudis) is a small, about 17 cm
long, bird with black and white plumage and crest. It is a resident in
sub-Saharan Africa and southern Asia. It lives on small fish and water insects.
It detects its prey by hovering over the surface of water and then diving
vertically to catch it. After catching the prey it rapidly comes out beak-first
and manages to swallow it while flying.
